Savannah Ghosts

Entrance to Colonial CemeterySavannah ghosts and ghost stories can be heard all over the city. Savannahians are preoccupied with the paranormal activity, and visitors are intrigued by the stories. For whatever reason, and there are hundreds of theories, there are many people in this city that believe they have had paranormal experiences. As you go on tours of the fabulous homes in the Historic District, most of the docents will share tales of a ghost sighting.

One major factor factor that adds to the frequent discussion of hauntings is that Savannah is literally built on the dead - Savannah has been built over many burial grounds and cemeteries. The original settlers, the Creek and Choctaw, used this area as a burial ground. Then came Oglethorpe and his settlers. Savannah grew as a strategic location and port city, and with the Yellow Fever epidemics hitting the city many times, new cemeteries had to added. Eventually, Savannah began to build on top of these burial plots, which many Savannahians believe is the cause of so much activity.

Wars and bloody battles fought in Savannah, not only added to the count of dead bodies, but also added to the number of active apparitions. Ghostly soliders, especially confederate soldiers, inhabit different locations throughout the city.

The sheer eccentricity of the Savannah populus, which is not a new phenomenon, also adds history to the ghost stories.

Many of the stately old homes are ripe with the presence of former owners. Juliette Gordon Low's parents, long deceased, are said to make frequent visits in the Gordon home. James Habersham has been seen in his former residence, which is now called the Olde Pink House. Anna, a woman imported from Ireland to be the bride of Steele White, died a violent death at the 17Hundred90 Inn and still visits room 204 frequently, and very noisily. Margaret Thomas, the last resident of the Owens-Thomas house before she bequeathed it to the Telfair Museum, is said to still occupy the same room in the Owens-Thomas house where she was born and died. The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS), aka the popular television show called GhostHunters, detected paranormal activity in their visit to the Sorrel-Weed house.

Many servers at the Pirate's House have felt and seen the presence of ghosts after hours or when they go down to the tunnels under the restaurant. The list goes on and on!
